Willpower is the ability to resist short-term gratification in pursuit of long-term goals or objectives. Willpower is correlated with positive life outcomes such as better grades, higher self-esteem, lower substance abuse rates, greater financial security, and improved physical and mental health.
During lab experiments, willpower is quantified by measuring how long someone can work at a task, or squeeze a hand-grip exerciser, or hold a hand in ice-cold water. That enables researchers to see how a person's willpower at the start of an experiment compares with the level at the end of the experiment.Oct 9, 2011

Willpower is a skill that can be learned and improved and, it can be surprisingly easy to learn, as one example from Walter Mischel's studies indicates. What this tells us is that self-control and willpower ability is actually the ability to have strategies to cope with tests of our willpower when they arise.
Stress also strongly depletes willpower. When people are stressed, they tend to fall back on ingrained habits—whether those habits are helpful or harmful. Often, this is not a conscious choice. Rather, people resort to old habits without thinking because they are in a stressed state.Jun 21, 2013
Willpower is a rather sudden and momentary burst of focused energy, while self-discipline is structured, well thought out and consistent. Willpower, in the moment, is more tangible and seemingly more powerful. The reality is that the power of self-discipline dwarfs that of willpower.
Willpower is the motivation to apply free will in our lives. It is the motivation to assert ourselves even if there is opposition or there are obstacles in our path. Determination is our ability to try our best to keep on doing something even if it is very challenging to do so.
Willpower is just like a muscle; to keep it strong you need to constantly nurture it. People with a great amount of willpower have the motivation and discipline to develop positive, successful habits and have a much better chance of succeeding personally or professionally.Sep 25, 2019
