A genre is a specific type of music, film, or writing. In film or literature, the genre is determined by the subject, setting or plot of the story. When you are wandering around a book store, books are usually arranged by genre.
It is written in the first person (“I”) point of view.

The purpose of a genre is to help you figure out how people tend to act, react, and interact in the situation in which you are writing. So if you tell your readers you are giving them a “movie review,” they will have some predictable expectations about the content, organization, style, and design of your text.
Genre is the form of your writing (a business letter, memo, report). A medium is the way in which a piece of writing is delivered (email versus a mailed paper copy, for example). Genre and medium are both determined by audience and purpose. The more formal the purpose, then the more formal the genre.

- Literary Fiction. Literary fiction novels are considered works with artistic value and literary merit.
- Mystery. Mystery novels, also called detective fiction, follow a detective solving a case from start to finish.
A balanced essay is an essay that is clear and contains both sides of an issue.
