Titles of full works like books or newspapers should be italicized. Titles of short works like poems, articles, short stories, or chapters should be put in quotation marks.Dec 16, 2020
Capitalization and punctuation Capitalize each word in the titles of articles, books, etc, but do not capitalize articles (the, an), prepositions, or conjunctions unless one is the first word of the title or subtitle: Gone with the Wind, The Art of War, There Is Nothing Left to Lose.
In MLA style, source titles appear either in italics or in quotation marks:
- Italicize the title of a self-contained whole (e.g. a book, film, journal, or website).
- Use quotation marks around the title if it is part of a larger work (e.g. a chapter of a book, an article in a journal, or a page on a website).
The word the is an article and therefore it is not capitalized in any of the six major title case styles: APA, Chicago, AP, MLA, New York Times, and Wikipedia. In APA title case style, the is only capitalized if it is the first word of the title. In APA style, the last word of the title is not capitalized.
Titles of books should be underlined or put in italics. (Titles of stories, essays and poems are in "quotation marks.") Refer to the text specifically as a novel, story, essay, memoir, or poem, depending on what it is. In subsequent references to the author, use his or her last name.
An essay is more 'discursive' than, say, a report – i.e. the points are developed in more depth and the language may be a little less concise. Typically, it will consist of a number of paragraphs that are not separated by subheadings or broken up by bullet points (unlike in a report).
In contemporary practice, underlining is generally not considered a standard way of distinguishing book titles in your writing. Having said that, there are style guides that prefer enclosing book titles in quotation marks over italics, so it's always a good idea to check this.
Assuming that you are typing, always italicize a book title. However, if you are handwriting a draft, it should be underlined. When you're writing an essay, make sure you italicize the book title instead of underlining, bolding, parentheses, or using quotation marks. Book titles are italicized.
